Optos Retinal Imaging in Walla Walla

Optos Retinal Imaging is one of the most advanced technologies we use at Valley Vision Clinic to protect your long-term vision. This tool captures a wide, high-resolution digital image of your retina—without the need for dilation in most cases.

These images help our doctors detect even the earliest signs of disease, monitor changes over time, and maintain a permanent record of your eye health. For many patients, Optos imaging can catch problems long before symptoms begin.

Why We Recommend Optos at Valley Vision Clinic

Optos provides a range of benefits, including:

  • A detailed, ultra-wide view of the retina
  • Early detection of conditions that may not yet cause symptoms
  • A permanent record for tracking year-to-year changes
  • A fast, comfortable, and non-dilated experience for most patients

This technology is strongly recommended for all patients, especially if you:

  • Are a new patient
  • Have a known retinal condition
  • Have a family history of diabetes, macular degeneration, or glaucoma

How Optos Compares to Traditional Imaging

To help you understand why Optos makes a difference, we’ve included two visual references during your visit:

  • A labeled image that shows examples of retinal conditions that may be detected
  • A side-by-side comparison illustrating how Optos captures significantly more of the retina than traditional methods

These visuals help highlight why this is such a powerful tool in preventive eye care.

About the Fee

During the height of COVID-19, we offered Optos imaging at no cost to limit the need for dilation. Now that our standard operations have resumed, we’ve reinstated a $39 fee, which includes both the imaging and your doctor’s interpretation.

Is It Covered by Insurance?

If we are monitoring a medical condition and can bill your insurance—or have done so in the past, then this fee does not apply.

Examples of eligible diagnoses include:

  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Macular degeneration
  • Retinal holes or tears
  • Other medically necessary retinal conditions

If you're unsure whether this applies to you, our team is happy to check your chart and confirm.

Is Optos Required?

No. Optos is optional for most patients but strongly recommended. If you decline, your doctor may suggest a dilated eye exam to ensure we still get a complete view of your retina. Your technician will walk you through both options during your appointment.
